When it comes to SCI-FI movies, the 1950′s monster movies were pretty cheesie, but Godzilla was better than most. He is very good cheese, in fact you could call him fromage. This image was lots of fun to do, mainly because the subject is so much fun. The original image was to be from “The Day the Earth Stood Still” (see below), which did do, but I wanted to try out different things. So in the end it turned it into a Godzilla poster.
I did a bit of research into the 1050′s SCI-FI posters and there was an amazing range of styles, so in many ways it would be difficult to do the image too wrong, which makes experimentation fun. The text is taken from actual Godzilla posters and yes he does wipe out whole cities.
Fun Fact: Many people in Japan consider it a honor to have Godzilla rampage through their city. It was very common for the movie studio that was making a Godzilla movie to receive letters asking if it was possible for Godzilla not to destroy Tokyo, but instead destroy their city…
